Disappointed that Beth wants to return to Paris, Stephen accepts the blame for Beth not wanting to be a family again. Katie, stunned by Beth's revelation of her condition, tries to console her mother but is unsuccessful. Frazzled, Beth wanders off and finds herself at Brooke's house where she meets her granddaughter Hope for the first time. Katie becomes alarmed when she realizes that Beth is missing and recruits Brooke and Stephen to begin a search. Marcus learns from Steffy the many reasons why her family dislikes Donna. Marcus, impressed by the way Steffy stood up for him to her family, finds himself even more attracted to her.

Steffy feels betrayed by Phoebe when her twin admits to telling Ridge about Marcus being Donna's son. Donna and Marcus give their explanations to Eric about why they had kept Marcus' identity a secret. Eric's reaction to this news is a surprise to everyone. Ridge reprimands Steffy for keeping Donna's secret and forbids her to have any further contact with Marcus. Stephen tries his best to convince Beth that leaving now would cause irreparable damage between her and her daughters. Beth gives every reason, but the truth, of why she cannot stay in Los Angeles. After chastising Brooke for yelling at their mother, Katie becomes distraught when learning of Beth's plans to return to Paris.

Katie assures Nick that he doesn't need to take care of her anymore now that her mother has arrived. Overwhelmed by her visit, Beth confirms her travel arrangements to return to Paris. Brooke overhears these plans and confronts her mother about not wanting to stay with her family. Marcus frantically tries to reach Donna to warn her about the possibility that Ridge knows their secret. Donna convinces Marcus not to leave because she plans to introduce him to Eric tonight as her son. Ridge and his siblings call Eric into a meeting to discuss the dire state of their company's image as well as the lie that Donna has been living.

Brooke joins her sisters in the reunion with their mother. As the sisters discuss a family gathering and Beth's new living arrangements, an uneasy Beth excuses herself from the room to make travel plans to fly back to Paris the following morning. Ridge hires a private investigator to find more information about Donna and Marcus' past confirming the relationship. The Forrester children unanimously agree to tell Eric about Donna's secret after learning of the negative press that Forrester Creations is receiving due to Eric's marriage to Donna. Eric's impression of Marcus changes after seeing him at work. Ridge gives Marcus instructions, on preparing a shipment to Texas, which contains an unspoken threat.

As their connection continues to grow, Steffy assures Marcus that the secret about his true identity is safe. Ridge's animosity towards Donna is fueled when he learns about an ad campaign that Donna created without his approval. Knowing that Ridge is looking for ways to get rid of Donna, Phoebe informs him of the conversation that she had overheard between Marcus and Steffy. Nick surprises Katie by returning home with her parents. Before seeing Katie, Beth reconnects with Donna, who fills her mother in on her marriage to Eric and Marcus' return. During an emotional reunion between Beth and her daughters, Beth apologizes for her unexplainable absence.

After many unanswered questions and much persuasion, Nick convinces Beth to come back to Los Angeles with him and Stephen to reunite with her children. As Katie accepts responsibility for her mother's absence and emotional abandonment, Brooke and Donna present alternative reasons for Beth's actions. While Katie naps, Brooke receives a phone call from an apprehensive Beth who tells of her visit. Brooke becomes a bit worried that her mother didn't sound quite like herself. Marcus and Steffy talk about Donna being his mother, unaware that Phoebe is listening.

Beth is put on the spot but refuses to answer some tough questions thrown at her by Nick. Later, Nick is told by Stephen how Beth has not been quite herself lately. On their first date, Marcus and Steffy share with each other stories about their past. As Marcus and Steffy get to know each other better, the chemistry between them begins to build. Katie confesses to Bridget about her feelings for Nick, but promises not to act on them. Katie suggests that she move out of Nick and Bridget's house but Bridget's loving words convince Katie to stay.

Jackie tags along with Nick on his trip to find Beth in Paris. During the flight, Jackie continues to question Nick about why he is doing so much for Katie when he is in a relationship with Bridget. Ridge enters during Marcus and Rick's first meeting and quickly begins to criticize Donna. Ridge tries to gauge Marcus' response to the negative comments about Donna. Rick comes to Donna's defense which causes a heated debate with Ridge. Brooke notices that Katie is distraught from her conversation with Beth. Katie thinks that their mother blames her for Storm's death and that is the reason that Beth hasn't been in contact with the family.

Marcus is furious when finding Steffy going through his backpack until she explains why she did it. Marcus clarifies why he and Donna are keeping the secret and asks Steffy to keep it, as well. During a conversation with her sister, Katie voices her concern about why they haven't heard from their mother, Beth, after all of the tragedies that the family has been through recently. Nick convinces Katie to call her mother. Katie is upset when she does not get the response from Beth that she was hoping. Nick tries his best to side-step Jackie's inquisition about his feelings for Katie.

Before Nick can respond to Katie's admission, Bridget interrupts. After a heart-to-heart talk with Bridget, Katie's guilt forces her to tell Nick that she cannot act on her feelings for him because it would hurt Bridget. After a close-call with Eric walking in on their conversation, Brooke tries to convince Donna to tell Eric about Marcus. Brooke realizes keeping Donna's secret could jeopardize her relationship with Ridge. After not finding any information about Marcus on the internet, Steffy snoops through his backpack and finds makes a startling discovery. Marcus walks in and catches Steffy in the act.

When Katie's vital signs shows great improvement, Bridget proclaims that her aunt will be around for a very long time. Nick is grateful to Bridget for all that she has done to save Katie's life. Later, Katie professes her feeling to Nick. Jackie is put on the spot when Bridget confronts her about her feelings towards Bridget and Nick's relationship. Steffy begins her search for information about Marcus and is almost caught in the act. Donna admits to Brooke about having a child, the events surrounding her pregnancy, and how this child is now working at Forrester Creations. Later, Brooke welcomes Marcus to the family.

Katie's fever has broken and her health is improving minute-by-minute. Everyone, especially Nick, is grateful to Bridget for her diligent efforts at finding a successful treatment for Katie. Later, Stephanie comforts an emotionally drained Brooke as she breaks down in tears due to all that her family has been through recently. Marcus tells Donna about the meeting that he had walked in on. Hearing this prompts Donna, once again, to postpone telling Eric about Marcus. Later, Marcus is forced to lie to Steffy about how he was hired at Forrester Creations. Afterwards, Pam convinces Steffy to find any information that she can on Marcus.

Ridge calls another private company meeting where he tells everyone how sales are down and that they have been receiving negative press due to Eric marrying Donna. Not knowing there's a meeting, Marcus inadvertently interrupts and ends up meeting the Forrester family. Afterwards, all are in agreement that Donna should not be a part of the company. Katie's test results are not showing any signs of improvement. Brooke, Donna and Nick each take some private time with Katie to give their goodbyes. Bridget is an emotional wreck as she apologizes profusely to Katie for not being able to save her. Later, while everyone awaits Katie's final breath, Bridget enters with Katie's latest test results.

Steffy tells Ridge how she enjoys working at Forrester Creations and with Marcus. Ridge, never having heard of Marcus before, becomes suspicious when learning that Donna was the one who hired him. Steffy also becomes suspicious when she later sees Marcus and Donna talking. After Nick helps Katie get into bed, she becomes feverish and has problems breathing. Katie suddenly grips Nick's hand tightly as her eyes drift closed. When Bridget and Brooke arrive with a newly discovered treatment for Katie, Nick indicates that they are too late. Bridget finds that Katie is still (barely) alive and begins to administer the treatment. Katie's loved ones stand by her bedside and pray for a miracle.

Bridget tells Brooke and Stephanie that test results show Katie's health is rapidly deteriorating. Stephanie questions Bridget's feeling about Nick and Katie being together knowing that Katie has a crush on Nick. Bridget is confident that Nick is committed to her and is only doing this for Katie out of the kindness of his heart. Katie recounts for Nick what made her prom night the worst night of her life. During their last dance, Katie becomes so weak that Nick has to carry her up to her room. The evening ends with an attempted "goodbye" and a passionate kiss.

Katie's family is devastated to learn that she has stopped taking her medication and has requested a peaceful death at home. Bridget privately tells Brooke and Donna that Katie's symptoms are getting worse and she isn't expected to live much longer. Stephanie pleads with Katie to not give up on life without a fight and to pray for a miracle. Stephanie later puts her past with Nick aside to admit her admiration of him for all that he has done for Katie. Stephanie then puts Nick in the hot seat by asking him about his feelings towards Katie. Later, Nick surprises Katie with a chance to relive the worst night of her life... but with a happier ending.

During Marcus' first day at work, Donna warns him to be careful of Eric's children and a snooping Pam. Later, Marcus and Steffy get better acquainted as Steffy still doesn't let on as to who she really is. When Marcus tells Donna about the new girl that he met, she informs him that Steffy is a "Forrester." Brooke and Bridget worry about Katie's condition and the possibility of finding another heart for Katie is almost impossible. While on the island, Katie divulges some of her deep and somber thoughts to Nick.

During their trip to Catalina, Katie becomes remorseful about all that she hadn't accomplished in her life and knowing that she will not ever get the chance to achieve them. Resigned to having a peaceful death, Katie refuses to take her medication. Donna convinces Eric to hire the "caterer," Marcus as Pam becomes more suspicious of the connection between the two. Marcus is hired to work with Steffy in the shipping/receiving department. Marcus shows an interest in Steffy not knowing that she is a "Forrester." Ridge comforts an emotional Brooke as she tells him about Katie's health. Ridge voices his disapproval when learning that Katie is with Nick in Catalina.

After Donna confesses to Katie that she chickened out on telling Eric about Marcus, Katie is forced to tell her that she is dying. Bridget and Nick plan a sailing trip on the Shady Marlin II for Katie where Bridget selflessly insists that Nick take Katie alone. While on Catalina island, Katie is no longer able to keep up her brave façade and becomes an emotional wreck as Nick comforts her. Taylor and Ridge reunite with Steffy, who has returned from attending college in London. After Ridge convinces Steffy to stay in Los Angeles to work at Forrester Creations, Taylor surprisingly gets a thumbs-up from Steffy about her relationship with Rick.

Katie attempts to put on a brave face and hides her emotions behind a few bad jokes as she learns more about her impending doom from Bridget. After learning from Bridget that Katie is in love with him, Nick vows to make Katie's final days as happy as possible. Donna suggests to Marcus that he get to know Eric better so the news of Marcus being Donna's son won't be such a shock. Marcus is very skeptical of Donna when she promises to make him a part of her life. Donna asks Marcus to stay in Los Angeles, work at Forrester Creations, and give their relationship a chance.

After Katie had fainted, Nick and Bridget reveal to Brooke that Dr. Patrick had informed them that Katie is rejecting the transplanted heart and only has a few weeks to live. Katie overhears the conversation and is devastated to learn of her fate. Felicia is taken aback at seeing a vulnerable and defeated side of Stephanie. Later, Stephanie returns for her forgotten keys and kisses a picture of Eric, as a symbolic final goodbye. Eric's irate reaction to Donna's confession about Marcus being her son pulls Donna out of her daydream and causes her to change her mind. Marcus becomes frustrated when he learns that Donna has not yet told Eric the truth.
