B&B Nominated for GLAAD Media Award

“THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL” RECEIVES FIRST NOMINATION FOR A GLAAD MEDIA AWARD

January 16, 2013…Los Angeles, CA…THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL has been nominated in the category of Outstanding Daily Drama for the 24th Annual GLAAD Media Awards for the storyline, “Karen Spencer Comes Out / Caroline’s Two Moms”, it was announced today.

This marks the first GLAAD Media Award nomination for the THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. It also marks a monumental moment in the history of the show, as it portrays the first gay characters in the show’s 25 year history.  “Karen Spencer” (played by original cast member and writer/director/producer Joanna Johnson), is the only female heir to the Spencer Communications conglomerate. She had been keeping a secret from her family, specifically her brother the powerful “Bill Spencer” (portrayed by Don Diamont) for years: that she is a lesbian.  “Karen’s” life partner, “Danielle” (portrayed by Crystal Chappell), and the couple’s daughter, “Caroline” (portrayed by Linsey Godfrey), stand by her side when she decides to come clean and come out to “Bill”.  Expecting the worst, “Karen” introduces “Danielle” to “Bill” at the same time that she reveals that she is a lesbian. “Bill’s” reaction isn’t quite what she was expecting.  He lovingly accepts his sister’s sexual orientation and welcomes “Danielle” into the family. In real life, “Karen’s” portrayer, Joanna Johnson, took the opportunity presented to her by THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL to publicly announce that, in addition to her character being a lesbian, she is also gay.

The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.  The GLAAD Media Awards also fund GLAAD's work to amplify stories from the LGBT community and issues that build support for equality.  The awards will take place on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at the JW Marriott in Downtown Los Angeles.  For more information about the GLAAD Media Awards, please visit: www.glaad.org.
